Pahrump Community Arts Initiative
Pahrump's Youth Art Programs in partnership with Great Basin College supported learners' sense of self-worth by developing social emotional skills and being recognized people who adds value to their community. Prior to launching this outreach project, Pahrump youth did not previously have after school programs available to them, so they were not feeling connected to their community. The project helped young people feel more connected to their communities and discover that they and their creative projects have value.
This project empowered the future by providing hands-on arts workshops, exhibitions, and showcases that build creative skills to spark careers in visual/performing arts and entrepreneurship. We facilitated intergenerational community-building that brought together people of all ages and backgrounds for collaborative theater productions, open mics, dance lessons, poetry workshops and more. The project impacted the community by uniting organizations, schools, and businesses to increase access to inclusive multidisciplinary arts learning that promotes individual and collective growth.
What is the connection between this outreach project and the principles of the portrait?
Hands-on arts workshops, exhibitions, and showcases developed creative skills and inspired arts entrepreneurship
Members of the public partnered to contribute their ideas and time to advancing opportunities for young people
Introducing youth to a college setting helped reduce future intimidation toward higher education institutions
This project fostered a growing sense of community at Great Basin College, encouraging volunteerism and talent showcasing inclusively, regardless of income, race, or skill level
"My favorite part of the workshops was being able to get together with the community, use our skills together, and learn new things. I learned how to communicate and how to be more artistic in my work."
